Overview

This course is aimed at school leaver’s age 16 plus who have left or thinking of leaving with no clear career plans.  Completing these Level 4 units would be a fantastic transition from school into college and would support a young person get ready for employment within the hairdressing/barbering industry. This would equip a young person with the skills and confidence to apply for hairdressing vacancies or progress into full-time courses within the college.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • There are no formal entry requirements but an interest in the industry would be favoured.
  • Candidates must be 16+
  • If English is not your first language you will be required to have ESOL Intermediate 2.

Additional selection requirements

Entry to the course is based on you:-

  • Meeting the entry requirements of your course and
  • Attending a course information session.

What you study

You will study a range of units:
  • Prepare for Hair Services and Maintain Work Areas.
  • Contribute to the Development of Effective Working Relationships.
  • Blow Dry Hair.
  • Shampoo and Condition Hair.
  • Plait and Twist Hair using Basic Techniques.
  • Cosmetology - Make Up Artistry.

After the course

Careers

You would have the skills to go into the industry as a Modern Apprentice or employment. 

Continuing Study

You could also progress into full-time hairdressing, barbering or beauty courses.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught in a live salon environment with hands-on practical tasks and also written work.  You will work closely assisting higher level classes with clients. You will also carry out a work placement within a salon in industry.  Support will be put in place where necessary from Student Services and Lecturers to assist you throughout the course.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include written and practical observed assessments.

A kit will be supplied to each student that will give you the tools needed to complete the course.
