Cooking made easy with Gary Maclean

As Scotland's first National Chef and the winner of MasterChef: The Professionals 2016, Gary Maclean has become a household name.

First and foremost, however, he is a senior chef lecturer at City of Glasgow College where he continues to enjoy passing on his expertise, experience and his love of cooking to the chefs of the future.

He hosts regular events at the college to raise awareness of simple home-cooking with fresh ingredients, and says:

“I really enjoy hosting our cooking demonstrations; they’re a great way to show people that cooking with fresh, readily available ingredients is rewarding and inexpensive. We have great facilities at the college which allow an audience get up close to see what I’m doing and I try to encourage them to take part. Cooking is about not being afraid to have a go.

“It’s a bit like teaching our students, who are always on hand to help me during these events. It’s always great to see that light-bulb moment when it all clicks and they realise they can do this. The sense of achievement in making a meal that your family enjoy eating, that you haven’t bought in a supermarket or gone out to a restaurant for, is what it’s all about.”

Almost 60 members of the public gathered in the college’s City campus lecture theatre to watch Gary prepare a range of dishes which started with chestnut mushroom pizza and ended with tiramisu.

Food enthusiastic, Alex Holmes, is already looking ahead to the next event, he said:

“It was absolutely fantastic. I loved every minute and am booked onto the next two events.”
