Historic league promotion for Team City

A 2-1 league-winning victory over Edinburgh Napier University has seen City of Glasgow College’s men’s football team win promotion to the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) 4A league for the first time.

The historic win means that the men’s team is only the second college team ever to gain promotion in BUCS and ensures that outgoing coach Andrew Shaw, alumni of the Super College’s HND sport coaching programme, leaves the team on a high note as league champions.

Commenting on the win, Andrew Shaw said: “Winning the league was amazing on its own but to go one further and gain promotion is fantastic. The performance on the night epitomised what the college stands for. It was a fitting way to end my time here, and I wish the best of luck to the next coach who will have an excellent group of students to work with.”

Sports co-ordinator Andrew Kirk, who co-ordinates competitive student sport and extra-curricular activities within City of Glasgow College, said:

“Words can’t explain how much this promotion will do for not only our college football teams going forward, but our other individual athletes and teams that compete in BUCS next term. It provides a platform for more funding and ultimately more opportunities for students to stay active and compete for the college sports teams from 2018 onwards.”

City of Glasgow College men’s football team saw off the challenge from the Edinburgh side during a competitive match held at the Saughton Sports Complex in the Capital on 14 May 2018.
