Talented educators up for top awards

City of Glasgow College is in the running for four of this year’s most prestigious hospitality and catering awards.

Gordon McIntyre, Curriculum Head of Events at City of Glasgow College has been shortlisted in the Catey Awards.

Jane McQueen, Curriculum Head for Hospitality; Kenneth Hett, Senior Lecturer in Food; and Kevin McCafferty, HND Professional Cookery student, are all finalists in the CIS Excellence Awards.

The CIS Excellence Awards recognise and reward exceptionally high degrees of creativity, innovation and excellence in Scottish catering, hospitality and tourism.

Kevin McCafferty has been shortlisted in the Young Chef of the Year category. He recently won a bronze medal at this year’s Young Chef Olympiad in India where he represented the college and Scotland.

In the 15 years Kenneth Hett has worked at City of Glasgow College, he has mentored a great many students who have gone on to win significant international competitions. He is in the shortlist for Hospitality Educator of the Year, while Jane McQueen is up for Training & Employee Retention with Caledonian MacBrayne for their Hospitality Apprenticeship partnership. She said:

“I am overwhelmed to have reached the finals of these high profile awards. Our Hospitality MA just launched last year and is the first of its kind in the UK. It ensures CalMac’s crews get the relevant training they require which includes a mix of class based learning at the college with time spent on-board CalMac’s fleet.”

The Catey Awards showcase innovative brands and trail-blazing people from across hotels, restaurants, foodservice and pubs and bars. Winning a Catey is highly significant because recipients are nominated, selected and rewarded by their peers.

Gordon McIntyre, who scooped the CIS Excellence Hospitality Educator of the Year award in 2016, and has spent most of his 32-year-long career working at the college, said:

“I am absolutely delighted and humbled to be shortlisted and included among the top tier of the hospitality industry. My thanks go to everyone who has supported me throughout my career.”

Kevin, Kenneth and Jane will hear about their CIS Excellence Awards at a ceremony to be held in Glasgow on Thursday 31 May. Gordon will need to wait until 3 July when the results of the Catey Awards 2018 will be announced at a formal dinner in London.
