Team City on their marks for UK Skills Show

Nineteen students from City of Glasgow College will demonstrate their talents at the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Skills Show taking place in Birmingham.

The students set off on Wednesday 16 November taking with them the hopes of the Super College to retain its current Number One Ranking.

Team City faces three intense days of competition in their core disciplines of construction and infrastructure; hospitality and lifestyle; IT and enterprise; and media and creative.

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Glasgow College, said:

“The UK Skills Show is the nation’s largest skills and careers event helping to shape the future of a new generation. Last year saw Scotland win 24 medals overall, with our own City of Glasgow College coming top of the National Skills League table with a record five gold medals.

“As WorldSkills Ambassador for Scotland and an advocate for technical and educational excellence, I firmly believe this competition not only helps to improve ‘real world’ skills levels but also helps deliver economic growth. I am delighted that our College is once again fielding such a strong team and we hope, of course, to repeat the successes of last year. I wish all competitors the very best of luck.”

Margaret Darroch, Head of Skills Academy & Development at the College, said:

“Our students have achieved their place at the UK Skills Show through hard work, determination and high levels of talent and skills, and we wish them all the very best. Our Skills Academy was set up to provide students with the training and support they need to take part in these competitions which help to equip them with the skills and confidence they need for the world of work.”

A total of 74 top apprentices and students from Scotland – the highest number of national finalists - will compete at the Skills Show which runs over three days from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 November at Birmingham’s NEC.
